Week 10: Faces
On monday we finished reading what signing statements are and wrote a blog post about them and how shared leadership works/should work. Tuesday we had off and then on wednesday we learned all about Register Switching. This is when you change the way you talk and act around different people. I wrote some about 2 different kinds of register switching below.
A Formal register is useful in a place where you are trying to put yourself in a good light or perspective. It’s good in college applications, business situations and job interviews. Without it you have the risk of not being accepted or even losing your job. Your body language should show that you are serious. Not slouching, leaning on things, and wearing tattered clothing. Act like you can handle anything thrown at you but not like you are putting yourself higher than others. Be respectful.
A Casual register should be applied while in a group of friends or new acquaintances. It’s friendly but not so friendly that it would scare people off- or too formal. It;s good for making new friends and being liked in a group. Acting relaxed fits with this register. It means you’re comfortable but not overly and makes you seem personable.
